Kottiyoor Temple – The Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva
Nestled amidst the lush forests and serene hills of Kannur district, Kottiyoor Temple is one of Kerala’s most revered Shiva temples, known for its divine aura and scenic surroundings. Often called the “Dakshina Kailasam” (the Kailash of the South), this ancient temple holds immense spiritual significance and draws thousands of devotees each year, especially during the famed Kottiyoor Vaisakha Mahotsavam festival.
The temple complex consists of two sacred shrines — Akkare Kottiyoor, situated on the banks of the Bavali River, and Ikkare Kottiyoor, located nearby on the opposite shore. The tranquil flow of the river, the rhythmic chants of devotees, and the dense greenery create an atmosphere of deep peace and devotion. The annual festival, celebrated with traditional rituals and ceremonies, beautifully blends faith, nature, and heritage.
Surrounded by forested hills and natural streams, Kottiyoor is not only a spiritual destination but also a place where visitors can experience the harmony between divinity and nature. The journey itself offers a serene drive through picturesque countryside, making it a must-visit for both devotees and travelers seeking a soulful experience.
